SAMPLE / 14-DAY JAPAN ITINERARY

The route works. The pacing doesn't.

A real example of how we'd review a two-week Japan honeymoon: what we'd keep, what we'd flag and how we'd make the exact same trip feel much more realistic.

Trip snapshot

DATES 19 OCT – 2 NOV 2026
ROUTE Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo
TRIP STYLE Honeymoon / culture / city / nature
MAIN CONCERN Too many activities. Not enough breathing room.

OUR VERDICT

Good trip.
Too much trip.

The cities themselves aren't the problem. The issue is that too many days are planned like maximum-sightseeing missions, with very little room for trains, meals, queues, jet lag, weather or actually enjoying the honeymoon.

01 / MAIN RED FLAGS

The five things we'd fix first.

01 / NIKKO

Nikko is overloaded.

Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, Ryuzu Falls, Senjogahara, Shinkyo Bridge, Toshogu, Rinnoji and Kanmangafuchi is too much for one day from Tokyo.

Our fix: choose a nature-focused Nikko day or a culture-focused Nikko day — not both.

02 / HAKONE

Hakone tries to do everything.

Old Tokaido Trail, Hakone Shrine, Lake Ashi, Ropeway, Owakudani, museum, onsen and shopping is too much for one day.

Our fix: choose one Hakone style: classic loop, slower honeymoon day, or art + onsen.

03 / TRAVEL DAYS

Travel days are doing too much.

Tokyo to Arashiyama plus scenic railway, river cruise, monkey park and ryokan check-in is risky.

Our fix: let the ryokan day be part of the experience rather than somewhere they arrive exhausted.

04 / USJ

USJ + aquarium is unnecessary.

Universal Studios Japan is already a full day. Adding Kaiyukan afterwards is possible, but likely exhausting.

Our fix: USJ is the main event. Have an easy evening afterwards.

05 / OSAKA

Osaka is too scattered.

Namba, Nipponbashi, Minoh Park, Expo Park, Pokémon Café, Dotonbori and a bar pulls the day in too many directions.

Our fix: make it central Osaka or a nature day — not both.

02 / BEFORE + AFTER

Same Hakone.
Much better day.

One example of how we'd simplify the itinerary without removing the reason they wanted to go in the first place.

BEFORE / EVERYTHING

Original Hakone day

Amazake Chaya
Old Tokaido Trail
Motohakone
Hakone Shrine
Lake Ashi Pirate Ship
Hakone Ropeway
Owakudani
Gora Park
Open Air Museum
Hakone Yuryo Onsen
Hakone-Yumoto shopping
Return to Tokyo
AFTER / KEEP THE GOOD BIT

Slower Hakone day

Travel to Hakone
Amazake Chaya
Old Tokaido walk
Motohakone
Hakone Shrine
Lake Ashi cruise OR onsen
Return to Tokyo
WHY THIS WORKS /
It still feels like Hakone. It just removes the “do absolutely everything because we're here” pressure.
03 / REVISED ITINERARY

Same trip.
Calmer structure.

We're keeping the booked route and hotels, but changing how the days work so the trip feels more realistic. Timings remain flexible around reservations, transport, opening hours and energy levels.

DAYS 01–05

Tokyo + day trips

DAY 01 19 OCT

Arrival in Tokyo / Shibuya

BASE / SHIBUYA · PACE / VERY LIGHT

Arrive at Narita around 3:00pm, travel to Shibuya, check in, shower, reset and have an easy dinner nearby. Shibuya Crossing or Hachiko can be an optional short wander.

Koko Doko note /
Don't plan a proper sightseeing evening. Narita to Shibuya after a long flight is already enough.
DAY 02 20 OCT

Meiji Jingu / Harajuku / Omotesando / Shibuya

HARAJUKU · OMOTESANDO · SHIBUYA · PACE / MEDIUM

Start with Meiji Jingu, optional Yoyogi Park, Harajuku and Takeshita Street, then lunch around Harajuku or Omotesando. Spend the afternoon around Omotesando, Cat Street, cafés and shops before returning to Shibuya for the evening.

What changed /
Remove teamLab unless it's a huge must-do. It pulls an otherwise well-grouped west Tokyo day across the city.
DAY 03 21 OCT

Nikko nature-focused day trip

LAKE CHUZENJI · KEGON FALLS · NATURE · PACE / FULL

Leave Tokyo early and focus on Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, lakeside cafés, Ryuzu Falls and a short Senjogahara walk if weather and energy are good. Return to Tokyo for an easy dinner.

What changed /
This becomes a nature Nikko day, not “all of Nikko.” Skip Toshogu, Rinnoji, Shinkyo Bridge and Kanmangafuchi.
DAY 04 22 OCT

Asakusa / Akihabara / Shinjuku

ASAKUSA · AKIHABARA · SHINJUKU · PACE / MEDIUM-FULL

Start early at Senso-ji and Nakamise, then move to Akihabara for anime, gaming, electronics, gachapon and arcades. Finish with Shinjuku, Omoide Yokocho, Golden Gai and a Kabukicho wander.

What changed /
Remove Imperial Palace and Chidorigafuchi unless they're must-dos. The day already has enough contrast.
DAY 05 23 OCT

Slower Hakone day trip

HAKONE-YUMOTO · MOTOHAKONE · LAKE ASHI · PACE / FULL BUT SLOWER

Travel to Hakone, visit Amazake Chaya, walk part of the Old Tokaido Trail, explore Motohakone, visit Hakone Shrine and choose either Lake Ashi cruise or an onsen before returning to Tokyo.

Koko Doko note /
Hakone transport eats time. For a honeymoon, slower Hakone will feel much better than trying to complete everything.
DAYS 06–10

Kyoto + Arashiyama + Himeji + Nara

DAY 06 24 OCT

Tokyo → Arashiyama / ryokan night

ARASHIYAMA · RYOKAN · PACE / LIGHT TRAVEL DAY

Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto, have lunch, handle luggage, then do a light Arashiyama wander. Choose one or two: Bamboo Grove, Tenryu-ji, Togetsukyo Bridge or riverside walk. Then head to the ryokan, check in, have dinner and enjoy the onsen.

What changed /
Remove the scenic railway + river cruise + Monkey Park combo. The ryokan night is part of the experience.
DAY 07 25 OCT

Fushimi Inari / Nishiki / downtown Kyoto

FUSHIMI · KAWARAMACHI · NISHIKI · PACE / MEDIUM-LIGHT

After breakfast and check-out, travel into Kyoto and drop luggage. Visit Fushimi Inari, then spend the afternoon around Nishiki Market, Teramachi and Shinkyogoku before dinner downtown.

What changed /
Remove Saihoji from this day. It doesn't fit naturally with Fushimi Inari and Nishiki.
DAY 08 26 OCT

Higashiyama / Gion / Pontocho

KIYOMIZU-DERA · GION · PONTOCHO · PACE / MEDIUM-FULL

Start early at Kiyomizu-dera, walk through Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka and the Yasaka Pagoda area, then move slowly towards Gion and Yasaka Shrine. Finish around Hanamikoji and Pontocho.

Koko Doko note /
This was already one of the better days because the locations flow naturally. The key is not forcing every temple.
DAY 09 27 OCT

Himeji castle-focused day trip

HIMEJI · PACE / MEDIUM-FULL

Travel from Kyoto to Himeji, focus on Himeji Castle, have lunch nearby, then visit Koko-en Garden and leave space for a shopping street, café or slower wander.

Alternative /
If Mount Shosha is a must-do, make the day Mount Shosha + a shorter Himeji Castle visit.
DAY 10 28 OCT

Nara day trip

NARA PARK · TODAI-JI · KASUGA TAISHA · PACE / MEDIUM

Visit Nara Park, Todai-ji and Nandaimon Gate, have lunch nearby, then visit Kasuga Taisha and choose either Isuien or Yoshikien Garden. Keep mochi and coffee stops flexible.

What changed /
The day is mostly fine. The gardens and mochi stop just don't all need to be fixed must-dos.
DAYS 11–15

Osaka + final Tokyo return

DAY 11 29 OCT

Kyoto morning → Osaka / cooking class / Shinsekai

KYOTO · OSAKA · SHINSEKAI · PACE / MEDIUM

Check out, forward or store luggage, then choose either Nanzen-ji or a slower final Kyoto morning. Travel to Osaka, drop luggage and build the rest of the day around the cooking class. Shinsekai works if energy is good.

What changed /
Remove Nakazakicho unless the cooking class timing makes it genuinely easy.
DAY 12 30 OCT

Universal Studios Japan

USJ · PACE / FULL DAY

Leave early for USJ and keep the day focused on the park. Use timed entry or express passes if booked, then leave when energy starts dropping and keep the evening easy.

What changed /
Skip Kaiyukan afterwards. USJ is already a full-body experience. Adding an aquarium afterwards is technically possible, emotionally questionable.
DAY 13 31 OCT

Central Osaka

NAMBA · NIPPONBASHI · DOTONBORI · PACE / MEDIUM

Start with Namba Yasaka Shrine, spend late morning around Nipponbashi / Denden Town, then use the afternoon for Pokémon Café if reserved, shopping, cafés or rest. Finish with Dotonbori and a bar if energy is good.

What changed /
Remove Minoh Park and Expo '70 Park from this day. They pull the route out of central Osaka.
DAY 14 1 NOV

Osaka → Tokyo / final overflow evening

TOKYO · PACE / LIGHT TRAVEL DAY

Check out of Osaka, travel to Tokyo, handle luggage and use the afternoon as an overflow slot for final shopping, a missed café, Tokyo Station or an easy Shibuya / Harajuku wander.

Koko Doko note /
Don't let this become “one last full Tokyo day.” It's a travel and reset day.
DAY 15 2 NOV

Departure from Narita

DEPARTURE · PACE / TRAVEL ONLY

Slow breakfast, pack, check out and maybe grab something nearby before travelling to Narita with plenty of buffer for the 5:00pm flight.

Koko Doko note /
Keep departure day boring and stress-free.
